Rebuilding Livelihood Through Poultry
Tirhas Gebrezgiher is a 35-year-old single mother. She lives in Mariam Shewito Kebele with her two children. Before the war, she owned a couple of chickens and sheep that she traded at the local market. In addition, she used to use a nearby irrigation to produce vegetables.
At the time of the war, she fled to a place called Samayita with her children. Even though they found a place to settle in they were caught and held at gunpoint by soldiers. Barely escaped with their lives traumatizing her and her children even after their return.
To make matters worse she found that none of her chickens and sheep survived. She returned to the empty house. For months Tirhas worked on other people’s farmland to feed her children.
It was at this time that Tirhas was informed that she was selected to receive support from Glimmer and REST. Tirhas said:
“I was very happy, I felt like I can continue living when I received the training I rejoiced because I had a few experiences with the chickens I knew that It wouldn’t be difficult for me to manage”
She also adds that this wouldn’t have been possible without Glimmer and REST support. Nowadays Tirhas owns 25 chickens and is very happy with the support she received.
